The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Medicine is recruiting a Department Head for Family Medicine.

The expanding Department currently has 42 academic and clinical faculty members. The Department is dedicated to clinical care, education, and research that meets the primary care needs of a diverse urban population, serving over 100,000 patients annually. Many Department physicians practice at Mile Square Health Center, a federally qualified health center that serves an inner city population at five sites. The Department runs the UIC student health service, serving over 30,000 students, maintaining a clinical presence across both East and West campuses, as well as throughout the city.  The Faculty and Residents provide broad spectrum care in the academic medical center, including maternity care and two Family Medicine inpatient services, admitting all ages.   The department encompasses a very diverse, mission oriented faculty who prioritize clinical care, education and research/innovation.

We have a top-rated Family Medicine clerkship that trains 190 medical students each year and an outstanding Family Medicine Residency with 24 residents. We have a longstanding history of developing educational innovations aimed at preparing the heath workforce to meet the needs of our diverse patient populations. We are co-leading one of 44 national Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Programs (GWEPs) funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The department also includes the Midwest AIDS Training and Education Center (MATEC), also funded by HRSA.


The Department’s research division is undergoing expansion. Currently, the department ranks 34# nationally NIH funding (Blue Ridge Ranking).  We are developing a program in interprofessional education and collaborative care with collaborative teams that will investigate innovative solutions to improving primary care, especially care of underserved and vulnerable populations. Foci of research and health professions education in the Department include health disparities, management of chronic illness, the provision of preventive services, HIV, women’s health, health informatics and practice transformation to improve efficiency and quality of care. We recently established a Primary Care Clinical Informatics Research and Education Program.

The UIC Health Sciences campus is located in the heart of Chicago, the third largest city in the United States, in the Illinois Medical District. It is one of the largest health science centers in the country and includes the UIC Colleges of Applied Health Sciences, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work, and the School of Public Health.  This environment provides outstanding opportunities for collaboration in education, research and patient care.   Each year, UI Health provides care to a very diverse population of  patients.  Family Medicine faculty participate a full spectrum of care – from clinic to hospitalizations and from perinatal to end of life.  The Department of Family Medicine has excellent collaborative relationships with the other major medical school clinical departments –including Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics/Gynecology and Surgery.


Candidates should be an M.D. or D.O., board certified in Family Medicine with administrative leadership experience in an academic medical center or comparable setting. They should possess a record of clinical excellence, scholarship, research and service commensurate with Associate or Full Professor appointment in the College.  The candidate should also have demonstrated ability to provide dynamic, visionary leadership in patient care, education and research.  Additionally, candidates should be committed to working collaboratively across multiple specialties and with diverse faculty and leaders.
