While medical education has been part of the clinical landscape of Austin Texas since the mid-1970s, the Dell Medical School enrolled its first class of 50 undergraduate medical students in June of 2016. As part of The University of Texas at Austin, one of the nation’s leading research universities, the Dell Medical School will pursue innovation in the re-design of healthcare delivery, excellence in healthcare research, and programs in interdisciplinary and inter-professional education.

Dell Medical School (DMS) is the first medical school established in nearly five decades by a member of the Association of American Universities, an organization of leading public and private research universities.  DMS is partnering closely with the community and regional healthcare providers and payers to provide new models for health promotion, healthcare delivery, and clinical care for the community’s underserved population.

The Family Medicine residency program has been in existence since 1974 and is currently a fully ACGME accredited residency program sponsored by the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School.  Resident continuity clinics operate out of CommUnityCare’s Southeast Health and Wellness Clinic (SEHWC). We are hopeful that this primary care experience will inspire a career in Primary Care for a substantial proportion of our residents. 

The SEHWC is a result of a collaborative effort involving the Southeast Austin community, Central Health, and CommUnityCare. The site offers a full range of healthcare services, including dental care, family medicine, internal medicine, specialty care, behavioral health, radiology, and an on-site pharmacy. Additional community resources are available including meeting rooms, exercise spaces, and a demonstration kitchen.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee and ensure the quality of didactic and clinical education in all sites that participate in the program, including development of the educational curriculum.
  • Assist in the recruitment, interviewing, selection, matching, and onboarding of residents for the residency program.
  • Comply with the accreditation guidelines of the Review Committee for Family Medicine of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the American Board of Family Medicine, and the sponsoring institutions written policies and procedures.
  • Supervise Family Medicine resident physicians at the CommUnityCare Blackstock Family Medicine Clinic and in in-patient settings and precept medical students at the CommUnityCare Blackstock Family Medicine Clinic.
  • Provide direct culturally-competent and inclusive direct outpatient care at the CommUnityCare Blackstock Family Medicine Clinic and outpatient and inpatient care at other University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School Family Medicine-approved clinical practice sites.
  • Actively participate in solving quality, performance, behavior, or professionalism issues presented by individual faculty members and residents.
  • Ensure the quality of care provided by residents in the program is of the highest caliber, and that lapses in quality are appropriately investigated, resolved, and used to improve processes and education.
  • Collaborate with Associate Dean/DIO for Graduate Medical Education at Dell Medical School and Chief Medical Officer of CommUnityCare on the development and maintenance of the clinical learning environment.
  • Participate on University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School, Seton, and CommUnityCare institutional committees as requested.
  • Responsible for the schedule of the Family Medicine Faculty to ensure presence in the clinic for 10, ½ days a week.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity in medical education, including race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, cultural background, disability status, and learning style.
  • Facilitate active involvement of all program faculty; developing strategies to recruit, retain, and promote a diverse staff that represents the population being served in Central Austin and beyond.
  • Participate and mentor faculty in inter-professional and teaching activities.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to faculty and residents in scholarship, teaching and service.
  • Assist with the inter-professional needs of the state by collaborating with other residency directors, community physicians, and inter-professional educators (behavioral health providers, Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioners, etc.)
  • Work with other residency program directors to ensure efficient and effective use of resources including conference space, call space, administrative help, etc.
  • Supervise the residency coordinator and/or other staff.

Required Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree
  • Medical licensure and appropriate medical staff appointment; Texas Board certification or eligibility required
  • Current certification in the specialty by the American Board of Family Medicine
  • Graduate medical education in an ACGME accredited Family Medicine Residency
  • Minimum of five years of clinical experience in family medicine, with two years as a core faculty member in an ACGME-or American Osteopathic Association (AOA)-accredited family medicine residency program
  • Eligibility for appointment at senior faculty rank is desired
