The Department of Family Medicine at the Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at the University of Vermont seeks a full time faculty member on the Research Scholar Pathway at the Assistant Professor level. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Computational Linguistics or equivalent degree in related fields, such as Computer Science, Engineering, Complexity Science, Data Analytics, Physics or Mathematics. Preference will be given to those with experience in automated or semi-automated measurement of communication features (text, audio or video).

The Vermont Conversation Lab (VCL) is focused on understanding and supporting high quality communication in serious illness. The VCL team includes multi-disciplinary scientists from University of Vermont, University of Rochester, Purdue University, University of Arizona and the University of California, San Francisco. UVM - based faculty represent the scientific fields of medicine, epidemiology, computer science, engineering and mathematics.

Description of the Position: Advances in Natural Language Processing and Machine-Learning offer untapped opportunity to better understand the complex, relational and dynamic nature of clinical conversations; to measure features of such conversations unobtrusively and in real time; and to identify proxy indicators of high quality communication that support healthcare reform initiatives to incentivize quality in natural clinical care settings.

We are seeking a researcher with skills in machine-learning, natural language processing or complexity methods to help grow the science and extramural funding of the VCL. The position is fully funded for three years, followed by partial funding for two additional years to support the time necessary to integrate with the VCL team and successfully compete for extramural funding.
