Very often, parents take their children's eye health for granted not knowing the eyes are the children's window to this world. They need to be taken care of so they can enjoy their vision throughout their lives.

When neglected, their eyes may develop conditions that might disrupt their daily activities and this may lead them into emotional stress and difficult lifestyles. These can cause strained relationships with friends and family.

There’s no need to wait until it is too late. Taking your children for eye checkups is something that you need to be conscious about and it should be an annual routine that begins when a child is 6 months old.

A comprehensive eye examination can detect whether your child's eyes have issues and they need glasses or have a condition that can be arrested in good time. As a parent, you want to raise healthy children, and that includes keeping their eyes healthy. Read on to learn the top vision health tips.

1. Providing Eye-Friendly Diet

Your children’s eyes need proper nourishment because they are still developing. A healthy diet improves vision and will protect their eyes from damage. It will also keep the children away from obesity, a condition that leads to diabetes which is known to damage eyes.

Foods that contain omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, vitamins C and E, and zinc should be part of their diet. Some of these foods include green vegetables, seafood and meat, fruit juices, eggs, beans, and oily fish, among others

2. Encouraging the Kids to Get Enough Rest or Sleep

A good rest is natural eye care because it refreshes the eyes just the same way it refreshes the rest of the body. Enough sleep also ensures the kid's vision remains crisp and clear and also helps to keep their eyes in good health.

3. Playing Outdoors

Do not confine your kids indoors. Letting them play outside allows them to experience the air and the sun which are both beneficial to the eyes. It has been found that kids who spend time outdoors are less likely to suffer from myopia and other eye conditions compared to those confined indoors.

This is because experiencing different proximities and seeing different colors stimulates their senses and help them to develop normally.

4. Protecting the Eyes from the Sun Ensures Good Vision Health

As they play outside, ensure their eyes are protected from direct sunlight. Provide their eyes with adequate shielding to protect them from the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun. The UV rays are known to cause eye deterioration and damage.

Let the child wear sunglasses that absorbs between 99-100% of UV rays to protect the eyes against any harm. Sunglasses are good even for kids wearing contact lenses.

5. Keep Their Eyes Clean

Your kid’s eyes are very delicate and are prone to infections, especially if they get exposed to dirt. Teach your children to wash their hands regularly and properly, and also to avoid touching the areas around their eyes with dirty hands.

You can also teach them to use clean hankies whenever they want to wipe the area around their eyes instead of using their hands.

6. Using Safety Eyewear

Kids do participate in sports and they also like to play a lot. These activities can be risky for their eyes if they are not in the right gear. Using safety eyewear will protect their eyes against harmful impacts while participating in sporting activities.

Remember that the likelihood of an injury shouldn’t stop the child from having fun and getting the benefits of exercising. All they need is protection.

7. Do Not Let Them Stare at Computer Screens for Long

Children like to play with computers and other gadgets such as mobile phones and tablets with blue light-emitting screens. While playing, they stare at the screens for far too long which may result in damage to their eyes. Staring at screens for long causes headaches, dry eyes, blurry vision, eye strain, and trouble focusing on distant objects.

To prevent this, limit their use of these gadgets or use anti-glare screens. You can also provide them with computer glasses if they have to use computers. You can also teach them to look away from the computer or phone every few minutes if they have to use it.

8. Keeping the Kids Away from Injury

Ensure there are no dangerous items in the house or outside where the kids are playing. Very bright light sources should be well avoided as well as placing sharp objects within their reach.

Some children may not even understand the harm that these objects can cause so it is upon you to keep the object away or teach the kids on how to handle them to avoid injuring their eyes.

Remember that popped blood vessel in the eye causes bleeding that interferes with vision. Also, keep any chemicals away from the reach of children. The chemicals may spill into their eyes or they may touch the chemicals then rub them into their eyes and this may interfere with their vision health.

9. Use Proper Care for Injuries

In case your child gets an eye injury, make sure you take proper steps to handle the injuries. Careless handling of the eyes can lead to further injury and even to the damage of the eyes.

Do not apply pressure, rub, or touch the eye. Take proper precaution before you attempt to remove anything lodged in the eye. If possible, take the child to a doctor as soon as possible.
